Peterborough’s federal election candidates weigh in on the sale of illegal cigarettes [Canada]

PETERBOROUGH– Illegal tobacco is costing Canada billions of dollars in lost tax revenue a year.

It’s also undermining government and public health initiatives to lower smoking rates. And the main source of contraband tobacco is coming from an estimated 50 unlicensed factories located on First Nations across the country while another portion of lost tax revenue is the result of non status natives purchasing cigarettes from First Nations reserve smoke shakes without paying both provincial and federal excise taxes.
