Man, 27, busted trying to smuggle $100K in cigarettes into city

A man trying to smuggle $100,000 in cigarettes from Virginia to Manhattan was nabbed by Bridge and Tunnel Cops on Sunday afternoon, according to law enforcement sources.
Maryland strengthens effort to keep retailers from selling tobacco to minors

Baltimore, MD (June 29, 2015) – Though it is illegal to sell tobacco products to youths under 18, in the past two years, Maryland has seen a troubling increase in the number of retailers selling tobacco products to minors – in violation of federal, state and local laws. Underage access to tobacco products is unacceptable in Maryland.

Contraband Cigarette bust in Chetumal (Belize)

Over 30 million individual contraband cigarettes were confiscated in a raid in Chetumal on Monday.
According to Mexican authorities, they received an anonymous tip and with the strength of a search warrant, they visited the town of Huay-Pix in the municipality of Othon P. Blanco.
The area is located a few miles outside of the Belize/Mexico Border. Authorities searched a building and found 10 vehicles loaded with boxes of cigarettes.
Illegal Cigarette Market on the Rise in Costa Rica

They cost about ¢200. Of course they won’t be out on the counter and the owner will look around before taking them out of a hiding spot.
Smuggled packages are also readily available at discounted rates. Two reforms passed in 2012 accidentally favored trafficking and smuggling. The lawmakers did not envision this effect.

Truck stopped on the lower level of the bridge, authorities said.
Three New York men were arrested following a traffic stop where authorities found more than 3,300 cartons of contraband cigarettes, police said.
Port Authority Police officers stopped a white Chevrolet truck being driven eastbound on the lower level of the George Washington Bridge Friday at 11 a.m.; said Joseph Pentangelo, spokesman for the Port Authority Police Department. Trucks are not allowed on the bridge’s lower level.
