State Police troopers seize cigarettes headed to KBIC businesses

The Michigan State Police seized 184 cases of cigarettes that were destined for retail sale by the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community on February 9.

According to the KBIC, the seized shipments were headed to KBIC businesses which are located on Indian lands, were manufactured in Indian Country and were intended to be sold in Indian Country. They say that this seizure is an infringement of Tribal sovereignty, Nation-to-Nation trade, the Interstate Commerce Clause, other federal law and Michigan’s own statute.
