Security Experts Express Concern over Nuclear Cybersecurity Proposal

Cybersecurity experts say that a regulatory request by the nuclear industry’s main trade group to revise cybersecurity requirements will leave systems in nuclear power plants more vulnerable.

The group, the Nuclear Energy Institute, has requested that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission revise its cybersecurity requirements, saying current rules are overly burdensome.

“If this is successful, then no one will be regulating the cybersecurity of a nuclear power plant for the purposes of ensuring system reliability,” said Michael Assante, industrial control systems lead for SANS Institute, a cybersecurity research and education organization, in an email.
