Seeing as there has been an abundance of mHealth news and announcements involving mobile device security and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidance over the past month or so, the topic is growing increasingly important among security professionals in healthcare organizations.
The FDA made three major mHealth announcements during the past few weeks, starting with publicizing its “Collaborative Approaches for Medical Device and Healthcare Cybersecurity” workshop that will take place October 21 and 22, 2014 in September. Next, it announced a partnership with the National Health Information Sharing and Analysis Center (NH-ISAC) to identify, mitigate, and prevent medical device cybersecurity threats. And on October 2, the FDA released “Management of Cybersecurity in Medical Devices” guidance to update manufacturers on medical device cybersecurity best practices.
Kevin Littlefield, Brigham and Women’s Hospital Information Security Officer, told HealthITSecurity.com that he expects continued FDA guidance changes, starting with the informational solutions, which the FDA has considered low risk.
