A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration official wants automakers to establish by next year a system that would allow them to share information about cybersecurity threats to data used in vehicles of today and tomorrow.
David Friedman, acting administrator for NHTSA, is pushing for the industry to create an information-sharing forum or tool that will allow automakers and federal regulators to share information on cybersecurity threats to vehicles, how they are dealing with them and where threats are coming from.
“Certain things when it comes to safety should not be about competitive advantage,” Friedman told reporters Tuesday at the World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems conference in Detroit. “Cybersecurity is one of those perfect examples where sharing information will ensure everyone is better off.”
