Big is the new normal when it comes to DDoS attacks, with the average size nearly trebling in the past year. In a report from Verisign to be released later this morning, the network infrastructure company says it’s seen a 291 percent increase — to 12.42 gigabits per second — in average attack size during the months of April through June, compared to the same quarter last year. It’s a 216 percent increase when compared to the first three months of this year. It’s now more unusual than not for a DDoS attack to be smaller than 1 Gbps: 65 percent of all attacks were larger, Verisign says.
