The Commerce Department is developing a centralized cybersecurity center to provide an additional layer of oversight and synthesis, said Rod Turk, departmental chief information security officer, while speaking Jan. 14 during a conference panel.
The new center won’t replace security operations centers within large bureaus, Turk said, stating that most components do “fairly well” at monitoring their networks and other security activities.
The planned enterprise security oversight center will consolidate reporting streams from bureau centers, he said, while speaking at the AFCEA-Bethesda Big Data Technology Symposium in Washington, D.C.
“We’re going to be taking those feeds from our continuous monitoring tools and providing visibility to all of the CIOs within Commerce, so we can see what the patch cycle is like” and identify attack trends that might not be visible on a bureau-by-bureau basis, he said.
