Cybersecurity insurance, grants and liability relief are among the top incentives government can provide to encourage participation in a voluntary cybersecurity framework, according to the top White House cybersecurity official.
White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Michael Daniel today listed the types of incentives federal agencies may provide to encourage private-sector adoption of the voluntary framework being developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology in a blog originally posted on the White House website.
Daniel offered a broad overview of potential incentives identified in separate reports drafted by DHS and the departments of Treasury and Commerce, although the actual reports have not been released. Daniel emphasized that none of the proposed incentives have been adopted as administration policy.
Daniel said agencies have the authority to implement some of the incentives, while others will require legislation or “additional maturation of the Cybersecurity Framework and Voluntary Program, along with further analysis and dialogue between the Administration, Congress, and private sector stakeholders.”
