CBS/AP) Several states have weighed in on the lawsuit between the federal government and big tobacco over new graphic tobacco warning labels the FDA wants placed on cigarette packs in 2012.
Twenty four attorneys general filed a friend of the court brief on Friday in the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington in support of the FDA’s challenge of a lower court ruling in the case.
RICHMOND, Va. — Altria Group Inc.’s tobacco operating companies launched a “Citizens for Tobacco Rights” Web site last week. The new site is geared toward “adult tobacco consumers who are interested in information and advocacy on tobacco-related public policy issues,” according to a company statement.
“Philip Morris USA, U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company and John Middleton believe that it is important for adult tobacco consumers to make their voices heard on issues that affect them.”
According to the company, the new site, Citizens for Tobacco Rights, offers adult consumers information, tools and resources to help them “get informed, involved and active on tobacco issues.”
Health groups are speaking out against Camacho Cigars’ involvement at the 2012 Discovery Orange Bowl on Jan. 4 in Miami Gardens, Fla. The company will have cigar smoking lounges at the game and other fan-related events as part of its three-year sponsorship deal with the Orange Bowl Committee.

The Food and Drug Administration issued a press release on November 10 (here), titled “FDA acts to protect children from illegal tobacco sales.” It advises that “most retail establishments inspected by the FDA have been found to be in compliance with the law” restricting sales of tobacco to minors. The release focused on warning letters sent “to more than 1,200 retailers, the majority of which respond to violations relating to selling tobacco to minors, as part of its ongoing effort to reduce tobacco use among children.”
