Convenice Store Decisions

In early April, the Village of Haverstraw, N.Y., adopted a first-of-its-kind ordinance in the U.S. that requires retailers to keep tobacco out of public view. To learn more about how the ordinance will impact retailers and the legal questions raised by the display ban, Convenience Store Decisions sat down with Thomas Briant, the executive director and legal counsel for the National Association of Tobacco Outlets (NATO) in Minneapolis.

A new Kansas law that takes effect July 1 will ban anyone under 18 from purchasing or possessing electronic cigarettes.
Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson said the Kansas Alcoholic Beverage Control had heard concerns from school resource officers about students who possessed the electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, some of which were designed like pens and flash drives instead of cigarettes. Thompson said school districts could create their own policies prohibiting possession of the items on school property but that it was not illegal for students to have or use e-cigarettes.

Willful blindness of our public health officials on tobacco is still killing hundreds of thousands of Americans each year.
Here are the facts:
- There are approximately 46 million tobacco smokers in the United States.
- While three-quarters say they want to quit smoking, and about one-third try to quit each year, fewer than 10% succeed.

When it comes to public health, the government is a divided house. What the health ministry proposes, the information and broadcasting (I&B) ministry disposes.
This is the case with regard to restricting scenes showing use of tobacco in movies and television serials.
The new rules to restrict smoking scenes, unveiled by the health ministry with much fanfare in November 2011, have been quietly kept in abeyance by the I&B ministry, documents obtained under the RTI Act have revealed. Under pressure from Bollywood, the ministry has asked the censor board to just ignore the new rules.
