Arizona stores feel pinch of cigarette ‘roll your own’ rule

Arizona business owners who capitalized on a booming niche market for customers who rolled their own cigarettes face a questionable future.

The operation was simple — customers bought pipe tobacco that was cheaper than cigarette tobacco and blended to their liking, bought paper tubes, and then poured the tobacco into a roll-your-own machine. Out popped a carton’s worth of freshly rolled cigarettes that cost about half the price of a store-bought carton. Smokers came to the stores in droves, business owners said.

E-cigarettes: No smoke, but fiery debate

People who smoke electronic cigarettes often don’t think of it as smoking at all — the preferred term is “vaping,” a reference to the small, battery-operated devices that heat nicotine into a vapor that’s inhaled.

The gadgets, which have been on the market for four years, mimic the look of cigarettes, but because they contain no tobacco and far fewer chemicals are widely seen as safer. Yet as prices drop and more people are using them to quit smoking or circumvent smoke-free laws, new studies are questioning their use. Researchers say they may addict kids to nicotine or irritate bystanders with their vapor, but the industry says they do far more good than harm.

Updates from the Center for Tobacco Products

  • FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) announced its Tobacco Product Manufacturing Facility Visits program today, which is intended to give FDA staff an opportunity to:
    • Visit facilities involved in the manufacturing of tobacco products, including any related laboratory testing,
    • Observe the manufacturing operations of the tobacco industry – from the receipt of raw materials to the distribution of finished products, and
    • Learn about the manufacturing practices and processes unique to regulated tobacco products and their facilities.
  • These tours are educational in nature and are not intended to include or replace official FDA inspections of facilities. Parties interested in participating in this program may submit a request for participation via the Federal Register Notice Docket No. FDA-2012-N-0853.

It all began with gum and skin patches in the early 1990s – ways of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without the need for a cigarette.

But it wasn’t about to stop there for the smoking-cessation revolution. No, leading brand Nicorette would soon devise the lozenge, the quick mist, the micro tab, the nasal spray and, of course, those little white “vaporisers” that resemble a tampon stuck in your mouth. But sadly, none of those nicotine replacement therapies (NRTs) could emulate the “cool”, blue-hazed image of the real thing. You’d never have caught James Dean wearing a Nicotinell patch, now, would you?

FDA May Regulate Premium Cigars

Are big, fat, $10-a-piece cigars catnip to children? That’s one question the Food and Drug Administration is mulling as it considers whether or not, or how, to regulate the sale of premium cigars.

Makers and sellers of such cigars, understandably nervous, are pushing preemptive legislation in Congress that would force the FDA to butt out.

But are kids really attracted to pungent, pricey, all-tobacco, hand-made, premium cigars? Stogie-defenders say not.
