The American Petroleum Institute on Seismic Surveys and Marine Mammals

The American Petroleum Institute has prepared a summary statement on seismic surveys and marine mammals.

 Topics covered include:

WHY ARE SEISMIC SURVEYS NEEDED IN THE ATLANTIC OCS?

 HOW ARE SEISMIC SURVEYS PERFORMED?

WHAT PRECAUTIONS DOES THE INDUSTRY TAKE TO PROTECT MARINE ANIMALS?

WHAT IS THE CURRENTSTATE OF SCIENCE AND RESEARCH?

Of particular significance is API’s statement on the safety of seismic surveys:

“Based on both available scientific knowledge and operational experience, there is no evidence to suggest that the sound produced during an oil and gas industry seismic survey has resulted in any physical or auditory injury to a marine mammal.”

To this end CRE has prepared a state of the science  report on seismic surveys and the well being of marine mammals.

The API report is attached hereto.
