Facebook to enable NGOs to raise funds through its platform

RTE published an article titled, “Facebook to enable NGOs to raise funds through its platform.” The article reads as follows;

“Facebook is introducing new tools to enable non-profit organisations to raise funding through its platform.

The new system will be launched in Ireland, as well as four other European countries initially beginning at the end of September.

It will then be rolled out to a further 11 European countries in early October.

It is already up and running in the US where Facebook says it has been used to raise millions of dollars for charities.

As one example, $10 million was raised in the US a fortnight ago to help those impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

As well as collecting donations using a dedicated donate button on a Facebook Page, the platform can be used to empower fundraisers and to engage with supporters on Facebook Live.

In Ireland, the charity Goal will be among a handful of international beta partners to start using it.

Five per cent of the donation fee goes to Facebook, with 3.5% of that going on the process of vetting non-profits, language translation, fraud prevention, operational costs and payment support.

Facebook says the remaining 1.5% is used to cover the cost of payment processing.

The world’s largest social network says its goal is to make a sustainable platform for good, not to make a profit.”
