Deadline Arrives for HHS to Comply with Request for Response on Medical Marijuana
Americans for Safe Access had threatened to sue the Department of Health and Human Services if HHS did not comple by today with ASA's request for a definitive response to a petition challenging the agency's position on medical marijuana. In a May 2 press release, ASA noted that it petitioned HHS all the way back in October 2004 to change its characterization of the science on medical marijuana. Under the Data Quality Act, HHS was required to respond to that petition within 60 days, but it has been continually stalling ever since.
ASA had said that it would sue "If HHS does not issue a definitive response by June 12, 2006." There is no update on ASA's website today, so we'll see what happens...
