Locals caught in tobacco operation [First Nations]

Several Kanien’kehá:ka from Kahnawake, Kanesatake, and Akwesasne were named in an RCMP operation targeting ‘contraband tobacco’ trafficking in the Valleyfield region this week.

The RCMP say the operation, dubbed Project Cendrier (ashtray), dismantles a contraband tobacco network operating primarily from Akwesasne to Kahnawake via the Saint-Francois Lake waterway.

Louisiana Man Sentenced for Trafficking in Contraband Cigarettes

Acting U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans announced that JADALLAH SAED age 31, of Gretna, was sentenced yesterday after previously pleading guilty to one count of trafficking in counterfeit cigarettes.

U.S. District Judge Kurt D. Engelhardt sentenced SAED to 22 months imprisonment to be followed by a 2 year term of supervised release.   SAED was additionally ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $456,611.04.

Shop caught selling illicit tobacco and alcohol to under-age customers

Trading Standards officers now hope this will deter others from stocking illicit tobacco and selling to under-age customers.

The committee heard that tobacco products found at the shop presented a safety risk and that an under-age volunteer posing as a customer was sold electronic cigarette liquid.

Police Officers Seize Eight Trucks with Smuggled Cigarettes

A cargo of smuggled cigarettes from Paraguay, valued at R$15 million (US$4.56 million), was seized by border police agents in Mato Grosso do Sul. The cargo of 390,000 packs of eight different brands, divided into eight carts, was the biggest seizure of the year in the state and is equivalent to the total collected by the police in the months of October and November.

The drivers of the vehicles were carrying about R$33,000 (US$10,000) that would supposedly be used to bribe inspectors and avoid the seizure of cigarettes.

Millions Of Contraband Cigarettes From Belize Fuel Smuggling Ring In Guatemala


Tonight there is major news coming out of Guatemala saying that authorities there have cracked open a major cigarette smuggling ring – and Belize is right in the middle of it.

“Guatevision” reports that The Public Ministry and the National Civil Police “conducted 35 raids to dismantle a criminal structure dedicated to the smuggling of cigarettes.”
