Re: CRE’s Creation of a Kratom Scheduling Docket

Dear Ms. Jarrett:

In his Open Government Directive,[1] President Obama called for creating and institutionalizing a “Culture of Open Government.” The President explained that to

create an unprecedented and sustained level of openness and accountability in every agency, senior leaders should strive to incorporate the values of transparency, participation, and collaboration into the ongoing work of their agency.


1st CRE Letter to DEA Officials on Kratom

Here  is the first letter CRE sent to DEA on kratom. The Federal Register Notice announcing the ban on kratom stated that DEA sent a letter to HHS  seeking an input from HHS. The CRE letter requested that the said letter be made public.

CRE’s request has not been acted upon.


2nd Letter to Policy Officials in the Department of Justice to Oversee the Drug Enforcement Administration

Scientists: DEA’s Kratom ban will hinder studies on treating pain and addiction

The DEA’s decision last month to outlaw kratom soon after Sept. 30 makes it much harder for researchers to figure that out – even as the nation confronts an epidemic of opioid abuse – they said in interviews with STAT. Labs will find it tougher to get kratom for their research, and studies will be vetted according to stricter government standards
