A 32 year old Somali man is to appear in the Bellville Magistrates tomorrow (Friday 2012-8-10) after he was arrested for the possession of counterfeit cigarettes.
Crime Intelligence members responded to information of a man allegedly transporting illegal goods in Goodwood. The members proceeded to the parking area of a well-known Goodwood shopping mall where they conducted observation over a Nissan LDV.
A while later the vehicle drove off after which the members followed it. At that time the detectives radioed the Flying Squad for assistance and followed the vehicle to Avonduur Road, Bellville where, at approximately 12:15 the Flying Squad pulled the Nissan LDV from the road.
Upon searching the vehicle they recovered 40 boxes, each containing 25 cartons of illegal cigarettes. The man was arrested and taken to Bellville police station where the cigarettes were handed to officials from SARS Customs for safekeeping. The value of the cigarettes was estimated at R125 000.00.
The suspect is due to appear in the Bellville Magistrates Court tomorrow (Friday 2012-08-10) on the said charge.
