Illegal Cigarette Manufacturing: The Heart of Cigarette Smuggling

The State Revenue Service’s Customs Police have busted a major counterfeit cigarette production facility in Babite Region, the Revenue Service’s Director General Ilze Cirule told a press conference May 25.

It is the first time in the Baltic states that the authorities have liquidated such a large-scale underground cigarette plant, said Cirule, with previous victories mainly centering on smuggling efforts rather than production.

The police found equipment that could make up to 4,000 cigarettes per minute, packaging equipment, and a power generator.

ABU DHABI // Authorities will need to be on guard against a possible surge in the smuggling of illegal, unbranded, low-grade cigarettes after new tobacco taxes are imposed, said a former Interpol director.

Escaped Lee County prison inmates captured in Mexico

WASHINGTON D.C.  (WJHL) – The United States Marshals Service reports two federal prisoners who escaped from the U.S. Penitentiary in Lee County, VA were captured in Mexico today.

U.S. Marshals said they worked closely with Mexican law enforcement to capture Salah Mohamed, 35, and Kamal Qazah, 37.

1 in 3 Cigarettes Sold in Ontario are Contraband

Contraband was highest in northern Ontario, where illegal cigarettes now represent 64% of all cigarettes purchased, the highest rate ever observed. In southern Ontario, 35% of cigarettes were illegal while the figure was lower, at 28% in eastern Ontario and Ottawa. The contraband tobacco trade is fueled by 50 illegal cigarette factories, based mostly in Ontario and Quebec, each of which can produce as many as 10,000 cigarettes a minute.
