Tobacco Distributors Plead Guilty to Multi-Million Dollar Tax Evasion Scheme

BOSTON – Two men pleaded guilty today in U.S. District Court in Boston to evading federal income taxes and defrauding the Commonwealth of Massachusetts of millions of dollars in connection with the sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products.

Raza Ali, 56, of Hopkinton, and Kaleem Ahmad, 47, of Sharon, both pleaded guilty to one count of conspiring to commit wire fraud and launder money and one count of making a false statement on a federal income tax return.  Ali and Ahmad were arrested and charged in a criminal complaint in December 2015.  A third co-conspirator, Muhammad Saleem Iqbal, 54, of Sharon, also pleaded guilty for his role in the same conspiracy in May 2016.  Ali is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept.14; Ahmad on Sept. 9; and Iqbal on Sept. 7, 2016.

When they arrived, the owner was found cutting meat in a “filthy” store room that had raw meat residue stuck to the walls.

While carrying out the inspection, officers also found a large quantity of illicit tobacco. More than 14,000 cigarettes were seized and will be tested before any further action is taken.

Maryland man sentenced for contraband cigarette conspiracy

A Maryland man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison and three years of supervised release for conspiring to possess and distribute over $6.6 million in contraband cigarettes, according to Justice Department officials.

Rakhamimov also distributed Oxycodone, prescription drugs, counterfeit prescription drugs and other drugs as partial payment for contraband cigarettes and in exchange for cash. He received over $350 thousand in cash in 15 drug transactions. Additionally, in October 2013, Rakhamimov sold 340 pills of Oxycodone and 1,000 pills of counterfeit Cialis to an individual who paid him $38,980 in cash.

A man was shot in Washington, DC on Saturday after an Argument over Untaxed Cigarettes

Crime Roundup: Man Shot After Argument in Northeast Capitol Hill Saturday Night

The shooting happened near the intersection of 17th and D streets NE just before 6:40 p.m. Saturday, according to a police alert.

Police said the two men were arguing over the sale of untaxed cigarettes and began to fight. One of the men tried to escape and heard four or five gunshots as he walked toward 16th St. NE. The man who fled was struck once in the shooting and hospitalized.
